Why HYROX Is the Fastest Growing Sport in Fitness, And What CrossFit Got Right First

If you've noticed more people talking about HYROX lately, you're not imagining it. It's the fastest growing fitness sport in the world right now, and the numbers behind it are staggering. But to understand why it's exploding, you have to give credit where it's due, because CrossFit built the foundation that made all of this possible.
I want to walk through both, what each one is, why HYROX is growing the way it is, and where each fits depending on who you are.
The Numbers Don't Lie
HYROX went from about 650 participants at its first event in 2017 to over 175,000 racers in 2023. The 2024/25 season drew roughly 570,000 competitors, and the 2025/26 season exploded to about 1.5 million athletes across more than 100 races worldwide. The organization is projecting over 2.5 million athletes in the 2026 calendar year, which would make it bigger than all of the world's major marathons combined.
Gym affiliations tell the same story. More than 10,000 gyms globally are now HYROX affiliated, a number that doubled in roughly a single year. And the female participation trend is one of the most impressive parts: women made up about 24 percent of racers in 2020 and now represent nearly 40 percent, with the split at many events approaching even.
For context, CrossFit has roughly 4 million participants worldwide built over two decades. HYROX is on pace to challenge that number in a fraction of the time.
First, Credit Where It's Due
Before anyone frames this as HYROX versus CrossFit, let me say something I genuinely believe. CrossFit changed fitness forever, and one of the most important things it did was give women permission to be strong.
Before CrossFit, the dominant message to women in fitness was shrink yourself. Smaller, lighter, less. CrossFit put barbells in women's hands, celebrated female athletes as athletes, and normalized muscle, strength, and competitiveness for an entire generation of women. That cultural shift is one of the biggest gifts the fitness industry has ever received, and HYROX's near-even gender split exists in part because CrossFit spent 15 years tearing that wall down first.
CrossFit also proved that people crave community and shared suffering in their training. That blueprint is everywhere in HYROX today.
So Why Is HYROX Growing So Fast?
Here's where the two sports genuinely differ, and it comes down to the hierarchy of competition.
CrossFit's pinnacle is the CrossFit Games, and the Games are built for the elite. The average member at a CrossFit gym will never compete at Regionals or the Games, and the skill ceiling, muscle ups, handstand walks, heavy Olympic lifting, means the top of the sport can feel like a different universe from your Tuesday class. You can love CrossFit for years and still never share a floor with the athletes you watch compete. The hierarchy is steep, and most people watch it from the bottom looking up.
HYROX flattened that hierarchy, and that's the genius of it. Every HYROX race, anywhere in the world, is the same standardized format: 8 rounds of a 1K run paired with 8 functional stations. Sleds, rowing, burpee broad jumps, wall balls, farmers carries, lunges. No muscle ups. No barbell technique that takes years to learn. The world champion and the first-time racer complete the exact same course on the exact same weekend, often in the same venue. Your time is directly comparable to anyone on the planet.
That's the draw. Everyday athletes don't just get to watch the sport, they get to be in it. Two thirds of HYROX racers are over 30. The oldest finisher to date is 74. It's a sport where the average committed gym member can train for 8 to 12 weeks, show up, and finish with a real result next to their name. Competition without gatekeeping.
CrossFit asks: how close can you get to elite? HYROX asks: how good can you get at a race anyone can run? Both are valid. But the second question invites millions more people to answer it.
Where Vitality Fits Into This
This is exactly why we built Vitality as three gyms in one. We're not asking you to pick a side, because we genuinely believe in both.
Our CrossFit program carries everything great about that methodology, the varied skill development, the barbell work, the community forged in hard training, led by coaching that meets you where you are. Our HYROX conditioning program trains the exact engine the race demands: running under fatigue, sled work, machine efficiency, and the mental game of pacing. And our Group Strength program builds the base of muscle that makes both of those better.
We've watched members who never considered themselves competitive athletes sign up for their first HYROX race and completely change how they see themselves. Our members have raced, our community has shown up to send them off and cheer them on, and our CNTRVL Series brings that same race-day energy in house four times a year for members who want to test themselves without traveling to a big event.
The fitness world isn't picking between CrossFit and HYROX. It's discovering that the person who fell in love with training through one often ends up doing both. At Vitality, you don't have to choose. You just have to start.
