Why Women Have More Working Against Them Than Ever Before, And What To Do About It

I coach a lot of women, at every stage of life, and the more I talk with them, the more I realize something. This generation of women is dealing with a combination of hormonal, financial, and cultural pressure that previous generations simply didn't face in the same way.

This isn't about doom and gloom. It's about understanding why things feel harder right now, and what actually helps.

The Hormonal Shift Nobody Prepares You For

At some point, usually starting in the 40s for many women though it can begin earlier or later, the body starts a hormonal transition that can stretch on for years. Perimenopause brings fluctuating and eventually declining estrogen and progesterone. This isn't a small background process. Estrogen plays a direct role in muscle protein synthesis, bone density, sleep regulation, and even mood stability.

As estrogen drops, women can lose muscle mass and bone density faster than at other points in adulthood. According to research published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, adults lose roughly 3 to 8 percent of their muscle mass per decade starting around age 30, and that rate accelerates after 60. Bone loss follows a similar pattern. According to the National Institutes of Health, women can lose up to 20 percent of their bone density in the five to seven years following menopause, one of the fastest periods of bone loss in a woman's life. At the same time, women become more prone to fat gain, particularly around the midsection, even without changes to diet or activity. Sleep quality often declines during this transition too, and disrupted sleep independently raises cortisol, your primary stress hormone, making everything from weight management to mood regulation harder.

So if you're feeling like your body is working against you, it's not your imagination. It's biology. And this reality touches women well before and after the years most people associate with it.

The Cultural Shift Layered On Top

Here's what makes this generation of women different from the ones before them. The hormonal reality hasn't changed much. But everything else around it has.

Women today are more educated than at any point in history, now earning the majority of college degrees in the United States at every level. That shift didn't happen decades ago and level off. It has continued to widen.

That education has translated directly into earning power and household responsibility. Nearly half of American mothers are now the primary or a major financial contributor to their household's income. That is not a niche statistic anymore. That is a role that simply wasn't the cultural norm for their own mothers or grandmothers.

The stay at home model that shaped previous generations of women isn't the default anymore. Many of the women I coach are running a career, managing a household, raising kids, and carrying financial pressure that their moms never had to hold in the same way. That's not a complaint, it's just the math of modern life, and it comes with a cost.

Why This Combination Is So Draining

Chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated. Elevated cortisol over time is linked to increased abdominal fat storage, disrupted sleep, and further muscle loss, the exact same things declining estrogen can already do to the body during this stage of life. Hormonal shift and life stress aren't separate problems. They compound each other.

This is why so many women feel like they're doing everything right and still not seeing the payoff. It's not that the effort isn't working. It's that the body is fighting a two front battle, hormonal and situational, at the same time.

Why Strength Training Is the Most Direct Countermeasure We Have

This is where it gets encouraging, because strength training addresses both fronts at once.

On the hormonal side, resistance training builds and preserves the muscle mass and bone density that estrogen decline works against. It's one of the only tools that directly counters both processes at the same time.

On the stress side, structured resistance training has been shown to help regulate cortisol over the long term. Regular training at a moderate, consistent dose supports the restoration of healthy cortisol rhythms and reduces chronic stress reactivity, even though a single hard session temporarily raises cortisol in the short term. In other words, the workout itself is a manageable stressor that trains your body to handle the unmanageable ones better. Consistent structured training, three to four sessions a week, has been shown to improve stress resilience while supporting long term health and performance.

This is exactly why we built our programming the way we did.

What This Looks Like at Vitality

When a woman walks into Vitality carrying this kind of load, she's not just getting a workout. She's getting a structured, coached environment that directly counters what her hormones and her life stage are working against.

Our Group Strength and CrossFit programming builds the muscle and bone density that protects against accelerated loss. Our HYROX conditioning gives stress a productive outlet instead of letting it sit in your body unprocessed. And our coaching, the actual relationship with a coach who knows your name and your goals, is part of why this works when a solo gym membership often doesn't. Accountability and community lower the mental load of figuring it out alone, which matters just as much as the physical programming.

You are not just tired. You are not just busy. You are carrying more than the generation before you carried, often on top of a hormonal shift your body is navigating for the first time. That combination deserves a real strategy, not just willpower.

Strong women age differently, and they don't have to do it alone.

If you're feeling like you're working harder than ever for less payoff, let's talk. Book a free intro session and we'll build a plan around where your body actually is right now.
